Ormoc City, Samar, and Northern Samar emerged as big winners at the 26th Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP) Pearl Awards, securing eight major awards that strengthened their reputation as rising tourism leaders. The awarding ceremony was held on October 2 during the ATOP National Convention.
The Department of Tourism (DOT) regional office hailed the recognition as proof that Eastern Visayas is steadily carving out a name in the country’s tourism sector. Regional director Karina Rosa Tiopes said the awards reflect the region’s dedication to promoting sustainable tourism and creative initiatives. She added that the wins highlight the ability of local government units to turn innovative projects into models for the industry.
Samar and Northern Samar’s big wins
Samar province earned the grand prize for Best Tourism Promotion Video and for Best Tourism Gifts or Non-Food Souvenirs with its Lara brand. It also took the first runner-up spot for Best Practices in Sustainable Tourism, showing its commitment to balancing growth with environmental responsibility.
Northern Samar claimed the spotlight with its Lalaguna Mangrove Eco Park Association, which won the grand prize for Best Practices in Community-Based Tourism. This recognition underlined the role of local communities in driving sustainable tourism and protecting natural resources while providing livelihood opportunities.
Ormoc City’s triple recognition
Ormoc City, one of Eastern Visayas’ fastest-growing destinations, brought home three awards. It won first runner-up for Best Event Hosting under the international category, first runner-up for Best Practices in Community-Based Tourism, and second runner-up for Best Tourism Gifts or Non-Food Souvenirs.
These awards placed Ormoc among the strongest independent city contenders, proving its ability to compete with larger destinations. The recognitions also affirmed the city’s success in blending cultural pride with modern tourism strategies.
Recognition for regional tourism excellence
Tiopes said the awards should encourage other local government units in Eastern Visayas to take part in future competitions. She explained that many LGUs have projects deserving of national recognition and that the achievements of Samar, Northern Samar, and Ormoc should serve as inspiration.
The ATOP Pearl Awards, established in 2005 in partnership with the DOT, recognize local government efforts that set benchmarks in tourism development. The program honors exceptional practices, innovative projects, and sustainable initiatives that benefit both communities and travelers.
With eight new awards to their name, Samar, Northern Samar, and Ormoc are expected to expand their tourism campaigns and attract more visitors. These wins also position Eastern Visayas as a region capable of delivering world-class tourism experiences while staying true to its cultural and environmental heritage.
